August Coho Fishing has been excellent despite the smokey conditions!

August morning and afternoon trips have seen a very hot resident coho bite. These fish are feeders meaning they are crushing herring and gaining size each week! We have seen a fair number of chinooks in the mix. Today we netted several early returning Ocean-run Coho Salmon! We should see large number of these ocean fish in the next few weeks, this year’s Silver Salmon run is estimated at over 875,000 fish which is a double digit increase vs the 10-year average! It will be an awesome coho season well into October!

Puget Sound Hatchery Chinook Opener was crowded and fishy!

Area 9 and Area 10 opened for hatcher Chinook salmon retention on Puget Sound. We had great action most trips although the hatchery vs wild mix was not in our favor on a few trips. It’s still an experience of a fishing lifetime to get tight on these spectacular fish! The fish should be around through August in good numbers. Doubtful the retention quota will last much longer but the Coho salmon are just around the corner. While fishing for coho we will continue to catch and release Chinooks.

They start off small in June and by mid-July they start to fill out! We have July and August dates open and are based out of Shilshole Marina in Ballard, Washington. Its a great time of year to catch a salmon.

Chinook and Pinks

Chinook fishing in area 10 has been tougher the past week. We are working hard to get them and are starting to see pinks each day in the catch! The weather seems to change each day and we hope to get back into a consistent weather pattern.

More chinooks are arriving each day and I expect the pink salmon to be in the sound in great number in the next ten days.

Chinook Salmon are early and larger than the past few years

Its been a busy few weeks! We have fished nearly every morning and afternoon the past two weeks.

Chinook catch and release has been outstanding. The fish are larger than recent years. We have have weighed fish up to 24 pounds and have valid reports of up to 29lbs! For Puget Sound that is much larger than the past 5 years.

We are doing so so on the resident coho. Some days they are biting other days we don’t see any.

Pink salmon are starting to appear. This past week we caught our first one and several more the following day. Smaller than normal so maybe these are just lost one year fish?

Should be a great summer

Invasion of the sea lions!

Sea lions have always been around in small numbers but in recent years there are more of them, and they seem to stay a lot longer! Check out this story in the local paper!

They actually visit the Puget Sound Later winter and early spring to graze on Herring during their annual spawn! It’s great to see an apparent rebound in herring! This is great news for the ecosystem including salmon as Herring is a huge calorie resource.

April Springer Fishing was excellent!

The 2025 salmon season kicked off April 2nd with a short Hatchery Chinook Salmon season. The fishing was excellent, and the quota was hit in record time!

The salmon forecast for 2025 is over 6M fish expected to return to Puget Sound. There will be tight chinook salmon retention regulations as chinook in Puget Sound and the entire west coast including Canada are struggling. It is now largely a catch and release fishery. for King Salmon.

Pink and coho should be off the charts!

Hatchery Chinook Catch and release is going strong!

While the chinook season has been reduced, we are still catching and releasing large chinook! Really good year so far and we are very early in the migration! Super fun challenge to catch this large fish on light gear. We are seeing fish ranging from 24 inches to 38 inches so far. This is a wider range than normal I believe.
